Sclerotherapy by Board-Certified Physicians in California

Most women develop unattractive red and blue veins on their legs as a result of genetic predisposition, pregnancy and the aging process. These unsightly veins are not needed by the circulatory system, and can be removed without creating a health problem. Most varicose vein problems can now be treated safely, effectively, and practically painlessly with an exciting office procedure called sclerotherapy.

I really appreciate my dermatologist, Sam. Her bedside manner puts me at ease and I trust she had my best interests at heart. She helped me find the best solution for my skincare needs, and helped me understand the treatments. It was through her recommendation and advice that I finally decided to go for Botox and the Halo Laser treatment.I have one tiny complaint, unrelated to my dermatologist Sam in any way. The chairs in the treatment rooms in both the Los Altos and San Francisco office are uncomfortable, even when reclined.Overall I'm very pleased with Sam and the services provided!

I have been a loyal patient at Berman Skin Institute for years and have always appreciated the quality of medical care provided. However, my recent experience with their billing practices has been extremely disappointing and has caused me to question whether I can continue trusting this practice. Before my last appointment, I was charged a $150 deposit with the assurance that it would be refunded after insurance processed the claim. Ten months later, I still hadn’t received my refund and had to call the office to get it resolved. Upon investigation, I discovered that I should have only been charged $84, with the rest refunded. While the billing department apologized and claimed this was an error, I find this explanation hard to accept since the exact same issue happened to my wife. This repeated issue suggests a systemic flaw in their billing process that needs urgent attention. How many other patients are experiencing this same frustration without realizing they are owed a refund? I’m sharing this because as a long-time patient, I truly want to see Berman Skin Institute succeed, but this is unacceptable and must be corrected.Trust is the foundation of any patient-provider relationship, and these types of mistakes are damaging. I urge the management team to review and reform their billing practices to ensure refunds are processed automatically and in a timely manner. I hope to see meaningful changes soon because I want to continue being a patient here—but only if this issue is resolved.

I REALLY am grateful for Berman Skin Institute. In a world where getting an appointment with a dermatologist covered by your insurance can take months, Berman is outstanding. I see Anna Staub. I know my skin very well and will quickly point out my areas of concern. We zap them or cut them out: off to pathology. It just has never been quite as easy for me as it is here. I feel like my concerns are listened to and taken seriously, and that doesn’t happen that much these days either. Thanks!
Anna was awesome. She did a thorough examination of my skin and answered all of my questions. She’s amazing!

Frequently Asked Questions about Sclerotherapy

Traditional sclerotherapy involves the use of a very small needle, about the size of a hair, to inject a solution into unwanted or diseased veins. The solution works by causing an irritation to the inner lining of the vein, which causes the vein to slowly close off and gradually disappear. The solution is safe, with few allergic reactions reported. No anesthetic is necessary. Appointments are normally scheduled approximately two to four weeks apart. At your initial evaluation, you will be given an estimate of the number of treatments you might require as well as a statement of our fee policy.

Most patients with unwanted veins of the legs can undergo conventional sclerotherapy. Patients with genetic tendencies toward excessive clotting or allergies to the medications used would be excluded.

Reduction or elimination of unwanted spider or varicose veins.

Bruising is possible. Ulceration and scar is almost never seen. The specific risks and the suitability of these procedures for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.

After the procedure, patients may return to normal activity immediately, avoiding strenuous exercise for approximately 10-14 days.

The tiny needle poses minimal to no discomfort during this treatment.

Before Treatment Instructions

Avoidance of blood thinners for one to two weeks before procedure.

After Treament Instructions

Non-buldging veins require no stockings. For patients with bulging veins, special dressings and pressure gradient stockings are placed over the treated legs. Patients are advised to take a brisk 15 to 20 minute walk immediately following sclerotherapy, and then patients can immediately return to work with avoidance of strenuous physical exercise. In two to four weeks, Our Physicians and/or assistants will examine the treated areas to check the effects of the sclerotherapy treatment, and consider further treatments to other veins if necessary.
