VANIQA® Rx Cream

Woman using VANIQA cream for facial hair removal

About VANIQA®

VANIQA® (eflornithine hydrochloride) Cream, 13.9% is a prescription medication applied to the skin for the reduction of unwanted hair in women. Usage should be limited to the face and adjacent involved areas under the chin of affected individuals.

How VANIQA® works

VANIQA® is an FDA-approved prescription product that works in the hair follicle to reduce unwanted facial hair. VANIQA® works during the growth stage of the hair cycle by interfering with an enzyme in the follicle necessary for hair to grow. This results in slower growth and improved appearance where VANIQA® is applied.

Improvement in the condition occurs gradually. Don’t be discouraged if you see no immediate improvement. Improvement may be seen as early as 4-8 weeks of treatment. Use VANIQA® twice a day, at least 8 hours apart, or as directed by your doctor, to slow the growth of unwanted facial hair. Individual results may vary.

Are there other methods to remove unwanted hair?

Yes. At Berman Skin Institute, we also treat unwanted or ingrown hair by Laser Hair Removal. Professional laser hair removal can eliminate up to 95% of hair within seven to nine sessions. In contrast, many at-home laser devices manage to remove only 70% of hair after three months of usage and require additional maintenance sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions about  VANIQA®

VANIQA® is to be used twice daily, at least 8 hours apart, or as directed by your doctor. VANIQA® is for external use only. Remember, you will need to continue your normal procedures for hair removal until desired results have been achieved.

  1. Use VANIQA® after cleansing and before applying:
    • moisturizer
    • sunscreen
    • cosmetics
  1. Apply a thin layer of VANIQA® on the affected area(s) of the face and any adjacent involved areas under the chin and rub thoroughly into your skin twice a day, every day.
  2. Do not wash the treated areas for at least 4 hours after application of VANIQA®.

VANIQA® has only been studied on the face and adjacent involved areas under the chin of affected individuals. Usage should be limited to these areas of involvement.

How long should I use VANIQA®?

You may start to see improvement in as early as 4-8 weeks of treatment. VANIQA® does not permanently remove hair or “cure” unwanted facial hair. It is not a depilatory. Your treatment program should include continuation of any hair removal technique you are currently using.

If no improvements are seen after 6 months of use, discontinue use. Clinical studies show if you stop using VANIQA®, in about 8 weeks hair will return to the same condition as before beginning treatment.

You should not use VANIQA® if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the cream. VANIQA® should not be used on children younger than 12 years old. No clinical studies have been performed in pregnant women. It is not known if VANIQA® is passed to infants through breast milk. Talk with your doctor before using VANIQA®.

VANIQA® may cause temporary redness, stinging, burning, tingling, or rash on areas of the skin where it is applied. Folliculitis (hair bumps) may also occur. If these persist, consult your doctor.

Update: Appreciate the quick response and action on this review. Their text reminders were picked up by my spam filter, so be sure to add their # to your contacts! Updating to 4 stars because otherwise I had a good experience with this office and Dr. Pyles.I went here for a 1-off skin concern a year ago. The front desk scheduled a follow-up appointment without my knowledge for a year later. I missed their reminder call the day before the appointment (they called at 8 am and it went to voicemail). By the time I listened to their voicemails 2 days later I found out I would be charged $150 for missing the appointment.
