Home Care for Psoriasis

5 At-Home Psoriasis Treatments

There is little doubt that prescription medicine works best when it comes to
treating serious skin conditions. However, between visits to a dermatologist in
Cameron Park, there are some doctor-recommended treatments that may help
alleviate discomfort and reduce reliance upon medication.

Keep Skin Hydrated

When skin gets dry, it makes symptoms even more irritating. To keep skin
moist, try using a generous application of lotions that are approved for the
skin condition. To seal these in, try using petroleum jelly or even olive oil.
Make sure to apply lotions right after drying off after bathing or showering.
Before bed, It may help to put gloves or socks on over hands and feet if these
areas are affected. This is a tip that hand and foot models actually use to
keep their skin moisturized.

Take Care When Bathing

Really hot water tends to dry skin, so it’s better if the water is warm and
not hot. Oatmeal can help sooth itchy and flaky skin. It can get added to the
bath right after it’s full. Regular oatmeal that’s been finely ground works,
but there are also special preparations that have been made for baths. People
who suffer from skin conditions might want to only bathe every second or third
day. Water does tend to leech the natural oil from skin.

Consider Dietary Changes

No study has conclusively proven that dietary changes make a difference.
However, plenty of people who struggle with psoriasis say that the condition
gets worse when they eat certain kinds of food. Triggers might include white
flour, sugar, and caffeine. It might not hurt to experiment to see if
moderating consumption of these kinds of food makes a difference.

Be Careful of Alcohol and Cigarettes

Some studies find that smoking more than a pack of cigarettes a day make
serious outbreaks twice as likely as they are for people who smoke less than
half a pack or don’t smoke at all. Also, outbreaks are more common in people
who drink more than a moderate amount. In this case, moderation implies about
one drink a day for women and two for men.

Manage Stress

Having a chronic skin condition may cause plenty of stress. Some psoriasis
suffers say that they suffer from more serious skin outbreaks during stressful
times. Hot baths are not suggested, but a nice long walk or a nap may be just
what the doctor ordered.
